How do you proceed

I started by picking out a nice napkin; I chose one featuring flowers and a hummingbird. The napkin has blue-purple tones, so I selected acrylic paint to match.

Then, I began by painting a nice background color on the coasters—something resembling the sky.

I achieved this by blending two colors together.

After that, you need to let the paint dry thoroughly; the coasters might warp slightly while the paint is wet, but they will flatten out again. Wait a day if necessary.

In the meantime, I cut out the napkin designs and removed the bottom two layers.

Then, I applied decoupage glue to the spot on the coaster where the image would go, and immediately applied more decoupage glue over the top of the image to ensure it adhered well to the coaster. You simply work through the designs one by one, applying whatever images you want to the coasters.

This way, you add images to all the coasters.

Once that’s done, apply a thin layer of decoupage glue over the entire surface of each coaster.

The coasters might warp slightly at this stage too, but again, they will flatten out on their own. I wanted to add a bit more sheen to the hummingbird, so I treated it with Pentart’s Chameleon iridescent varnish.

After these steps, I let everything dry for a few hours.

To protect the coasters against wet glasses and cups, I applied a generous coat of Pentart’s Triple Thick. This thick layer actually causes the coasters to warp; I was quite alarmed at first, but they flattened out completely after two days, so don't be worried if this happens.



Do keep in mind that the coasters have a water-based coating, so if something wet sits on them for a long time, rings may form.
